How Far Will You Go — Not to Let Go
February 6th, 2010 @ Ivana Taylor
Alexander is nine — well, almost ten. He’s let go of a lot of childish things already. Except for the “blanket.” Of course, it doesn’t travel with us anymore. It mostly just lives on the bed or makes an appearance now and then on the couch while we’re watching a movie.
I thought we were done with the blanket. But this morning, Alexander brought it down for some minor surgery. You see, it’s rather worn. The material is now the consistency of gauze and there’s at least one tear that is letting all the stuffing come out of it. Rather than sew the thing (because I don’t think the threads have enough of a foundation), he’s decided to tape it.
That’s as good a solution as any, I suppose.
It made me think about how much little things comfort us and even though we can walk away from the habits that give us comfort for a time — we’re always ready to “tape” and “fix” something that’s no longer working because the thought of doing something else might just be too scary.
